Become a Volunteer!
Volunteers are crucial to the mission-centered services of Safe Connections and our fundraising capacity. Diverse opportunities to contribute valuable service are plentiful. We welcome your involvement with Safe Connections and encourage you to fill out the applications in the links our application.
Answer Calls to the 24-Hour Crisis Helpline
Crisis Helpline volunteers work hand-in-hand with staff members to make sure that no call to the 24-hour helpline goes unanswered. As a Crisis Helpline volunteer, you provide compassionate attention while connecting callers to the most appropriate referrals and resources.
Requirements of Service
There are mandatory* 48-hour, multi-session training programs held in January, May and August each year. Safe Connections partners with the St. Louis Ending Violence Against Women Network (SLEVAWN) to send volunteers to a collaborative Joint Orientation, and also host our own mission-specific training.
The Safe Connections training program incorporates instruction provided through the Missouri Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence with our own curriculum. This comprehensive approach builds knowledge, skills and confidence which are critical to providing callers with the best possible support. To get an idea of the time commitment for training, click here to view a sample schedule.
*An alternative to the training program is providing proof of equivalent training and experience.
Contact Kelsey Burns for more information.
Once the training program has been completed, volunteers must be able to volunteer a minimum of 12 hours a month for one year. Hours may be worked in one shift or spread out in a variety of shifts as short in duration as three hours.
Volunteer for a Special Event Planning Committee
Serving on an event planning committee provides a wide range of opportunities for contributing your time and talent to the public awareness and fundraising efforts of Safe Connections. Some committees meet during regular office hours, while others convene only in the evenings. Visit the Events page of this site to learn more about the timing and unique features of our special events.
Volunteer for a Project Palooza Day
We are looking for volunteers who are willing to donate 3-4 hours during our quarterly Project Palooza Days to free up staff time to focus on clients. Projects can be anything from filing, stuffing envelopes, creating signage, organizing storage areas, labeling items, making copies and the list goes on. These tasks are intentionally chosen because they require little to no training but significantly affect work flow at the agency.
Volunteer for a Group Project
Have a group looking for a great volunteer project? At Safe Connections, we often have the need for groups to help us with painting, gardening and other group volunteer opportunities. If you have folks looking for a way to help out in the community, this could be a perfect fit.
To learn more or volunteer for any of these opportunities, contact Lauren Sachs at 314.646.7500 x123.
